Concept: The Toranomon Law building was designed as a complex for both law offices and residential living and was completed by the redevelopment project in March, 2006. The building is located in the business district in Tokyo, Japan. There are few plants in the surrounding area because the buildings of the business complex stand very close together. In terms of landscape design the most important challenge to solve was how to plant trees effectively in the limited space available and still provide a sense of peace and tranquility. First, we planted many bamboo trees to contribute a strong vertical element and to add the bulk of the design's greenery. At the same time, they help establish a calm atmosphere that's in strong contrast to the city traffic and noise surrounding the site. In addition camphor trees, trimmed like a hedge along the border, give the pedestrian a sense of security and direction. Direct lighting of pedestrian pathways would have added unnecessary harshness to the design. Instead illumination is directed at the plants. This indirect illumination helps retain the peacefulness of the overall atmosphere.
